Amazon launches new Android-based Alexa Tablets

Amazon has announced a major strategic shift in its tablet division, replacing its proprietary Fire OS lineup with a new series of Alexa Tablets running Android. This move provides users with full access to the Google Play Store, significantly expanding the available app ecosystem beyond Amazon’s previous limitations.

The new lineup consists of three models: the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Alexa Tablet 11, and the Alexa Tablet 8. The flagship 12 Pro features a 12-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and an optional Nanomatte anti-glare screen developed with Corning. It is powered by a 4nm 8-core chip and offers up to 16GB of RAM. The 11-inch model is designed for streaming and gaming, while the 8.7-inch model focuses on portability.

Central to the experience is Alexa+, an advanced AI assistant capable of on-screen intelligence, such as interacting with displayed content. The devices also maintain integration with Amazon services like Prime Video, Kindle, and Audible. The new tablets are priced between $229.99 and $499.99, with the Nanomatte Pro model starting at $549.99. Shipping begins October 14 in the US, Mexico, and Canada, with European availability following on October 19.
