Amazon Alexa product launch and leadership restructuring
Overview
Amazon has introduced a new lineup of Alexa-branded tablets and implemented a leadership restructuring within its Alexa division. The new hardware includes three Android-based models—the Alexa Tablet 8, Alexa Tablet 11, and the premium Alexa Tablet 12 Pro—which utilize the Google Play Store to improve app compatibility alongside Amazon services. This marks a strategic shift from budget-friendly hardware toward premium devices. These devices feature an upgraded version of the voice assistant, known as ‘Alexa+’, which is powered by generative AI. The service is offered via a $139 annual Prime membership or a $20 monthly standalone fee. The flagship 12 Pro model features a 12-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate and an optional Nanomatte anti-glare screen developed with Corning. Pricing in the US ranges from $229.99 to $549.99. Following the product launch, Amazon announced a shuffle of its Alexa leadership. Daniel Rausch will step down next month to eventually return to the devices and services division in 2027, with Aidan Marcuss succeeding him as head of Alexa. Expanding its hardware ecosystem, Amazon is replacing its Fire tablets with the new Alexa Tablet line in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom starting October 19, 2026. These European models will run on Android 16, providing full access to the Google Play Store. The lineup in these regions includes an 8.7-inch model starting at €229.99, an 11-inch model from €329.99, and the 12-inch Alexa Tablet 12 Pro priced up to €669.99. An update to Android 17 is expected in early 2027. The new series also includes dedicated Kids Tablet models in 8.7 and 11-inch sizes, featuring reinforced cases and parental controls. On October 18, 2026, the new tablet lineup officially launched in several European markets.
