Amazon cuts fewer than 1,000 retail jobs in US, UK, and India

Amazon has confirmed a new round of job cuts affecting fewer than 1,000 white-collar employees, primarily within its Stores division, which manages the company’s core e-commerce platform. The layoffs impact roles in customer service, selling partner services, marketplace support, and engineering across the United States, India, and the United Kingdom.

The reductions coincide with the company’s Prime Big Deal Days sales event. This latest move follows a much larger restructuring period between 2025 and early 2026, during which approximately 30,000 corporate positions were eliminated. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos attributed the ongoing workforce adjustments to over-hiring during the pandemic-driven e-commerce boom.

While the company reduces headcount in certain retail sectors, it is simultaneously pivoting toward massive investments in artificial intelligence. Amazon plans to spend a record $220 billion on AI infrastructure, including data centers and chips. Bezos has expressed optimism regarding AI, suggesting that productivity gains could eventually allow for shorter workweeks, though the company continues to use automation to streamline operational layers.
