Amazon deforestation hits ten-year low in Brazil
Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has reached its lowest level in ten years. Data from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) shows a 36.87% decrease in deforestation between August 2025 and July 2026, with 2,874.38 km² of area under alert.
This figure represents the lowest rate recorded since the inception of the current monitoring series in 2016. In addition to the Amazon, the Cerrado biome saw a 7.8% reduction in deforestation. Other Brazilian biomes also reported declines, most notably the Pantanal, which saw a 65.4% drop compared to the previous year.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has pledged to reach zero deforestation by 2030, described the results as “fantastic.” Complementing the reduction in tree loss, the MapBiomas initiative reported that forest fires in the Amazon region also declined by approximately 80% compared to the previous year.
