Data for the period of August 2025–July 2026 confirmed Amazon deforestation alerts fell 36.87% to 2,874.38 km², the lowest level recorded since 2016 and 55.6% below the ten-year average. Within this timeframe, the state of Pará reported 987.27 square kilometers under alert, marking a 25.5 percent decrease compared to the previous year. The Cerrado biome saw a 7.8% reduction in alerts to 5,119.46 km², while the Pantanal experienced a 65.4% drop. State-level reductions were strongest in Mato Grosso (-49%), Amazonas (-46.7%), and Rondônia (-41.2%), while Roraima was the only state with an increase (+32.5%).

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has pledged to reach zero deforestation by 2030, described these results as “fantastic.” He indicated plans to share these findings with U.S. President Donald Trump to address concerns regarding deforestation used to justify recent U.S. tariffs.

Recent reports highlight a complex landscape. While MapBiomas notes that Brazil’s native vegetation has declined to 65% of its territory over the last 41 years, increasing vulnerability to extreme weather, recent trends show progress. MapBiomas also reported Amazon forest fires decreased by approximately 80% compared to the previous year.

However, pressure remains on specific areas. An Imazon report found that Amazonas holds the highest number of indigenous territories facing strong deforestation pressure, with the Yanomami territory ranking first. Conversely, other data indicates indigenous lands accounted for only 1.7% of Amazon deforestation over the last 12 months, with nearly 60% of indigenous territories recording no deforestation at all.
