Amazon deforestation in Brazil reaches lowest levels since 2016
Deforestation rates in the Brazilian Amazon have seen a significant decline, according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Between August 2025 and July 2026, the area of rainforest at risk of deforestation dropped to 2,874 square kilometers, down from 4,495 square kilometers in the previous year.
These figures represent the lowest deforestation levels recorded since the inception of the DETER monitoring system in 2016. During the current term of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the total area under alert in the Amazon has reached 19,642 square kilometers, marking a 41% reduction compared to the 2019-2022 period.
The environmental impact of this reduction is substantial. The NGO Observatório do Clima reports that the decrease in deforestation has prevented the release of CO2 equivalent to Brazil's total annual gross emissions. This is particularly critical as deforestation accounts for approximately half of the country's carbon emissions.
