Amazon Germany switches to Wero payment method, replacing iDEAL
Amazon Germany is beginning a phased transition from the Dutch iDEAL checkout option to the new European payment system Wero. The change is visible in the German shop where the checkout now displays "Bezahlen mit iDEAL | Wero" and both names and logos will appear together during the migration.
The rollout starts in 2026 with a combined logo and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2027. For shoppers the payment flow remains unchanged – they continue to use their banking app – while the branding shifts from iDEAL to Wero. The new method is promoted as a pan‑European standard that simplifies cross‑border transactions and offers an alternative to services such as PayPal. Wero is backed by a consortium of European banks and has already been adopted by other retailers including Lidl and Decathlon, with Check24 testing the integration.
Amazon’s adoption makes it one of the first major online retailers in Germany to visibly launch the Wero system, signalling broader industry movement toward a unified European digital‑payment infrastructure.
