European Wero payment service rollout

Entities: Belgium · Wero · German online retail market · Germany · 18 European banks

Overview

In late June 2026 the community site Werotracker.eu began mapping where the European Payments Initiative (EPI)‑backed service Wero could be used, listing participating banks in France, Germany and Belgium and the first online merchants.

By late July, Lidl announced that its German online shop had integrated Wero, becoming the first grocery retailer in Germany to offer the real‑time, account‑to‑account method in e‑commerce. Customers must hold an account at one of the 18 EPI‑partner banks and activate Wero in their banking app; transactions are authorised within the encrypted banking environment or via a QR‑code.

Around the same period Decathlon added Wero for online purchases and indicated plans to roll the method out at physical checkout points.

The Lidl rollout officially began on 24 July 2026 and was reiterated on 26 July, with the retailer emphasizing support for European digital‑payment sovereignty and noting that the option is currently limited to online sales. The integration allows instant fund transfer directly from the shopper’s bank to Lidl, with refunds sent to the original account, further showcasing merchant interest in a home‑grown alternative to global providers.

At launch more than 57 million Europeans were already using Wero, reflecting rapid adoption of the EPI‑backed system. Lidl said it will extend the payment option to its online stores in Belgium and France later in 2026, expanding the service beyond Germany.
