Amazon integrates Wero European payment system

Amazon is integrating Wero, a European digital payment system developed by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), into its platform. In German-speaking markets, the service is currently appearing as ‘Pay with iDEAL/Wero’ as the transition from iDEAL to Wero takes place. This full migration is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Wero aims to establish a unified standard for digital payments across Europe, serving as a regional alternative to international services such as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Visa. The system is supported by 18 European financial institutions and already has over 57 million users in Germany, Belgium, and France. Other major retailers, including Lidl and Decathlon, have already adopted the service.

The system is also preparing for a market launch in Austria, with Erste Bank and members of the Raiffeisen Group announcing their support. For private transfers, Wero intends to simplify transactions by allowing users to send money using only a mobile phone number instead of an IBAN.
