Amazon replaces Fire tablets with new Android-based Alexa Tablet lineup

Amazon has announced a major strategic shift in its hardware lineup, retiring the long-standing Fire tablet brand in favor of a new series called Alexa Tablets. Moving away from its proprietary Fire OS, the new devices will run on Android, providing native access to the Google Play Store for millions of applications including YouTube and Netflix.

The new lineup consists of three models: the flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Alexa Tablet 11, and the compact Alexa Tablet 8. The 12 Pro model features a 12-inch 120Hz display, an aluminum unibody, and an optional Nanomatte anti-reflective screen developed with Corning. It is designed for productivity with support for the Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard.

A central feature across all models is Alexa+, an integrated AI assistant capable of “On-Screen Intelligence,” which allows the assistant to analyze on-screen content to provide contextual help. Amazon also introduced specialized Amazon Kids Tablets, which include child-proof cases and a one-year subscription to Amazon Kids+.

Prices for the new series start at $229.99 for the 8-inch model, $329.99 for the 11-inch model, and $499.99 for the 12 Pro. Pre-orders are currently open, with shipping scheduled to begin on October 14 in North America and October 19 in various European markets.
