Amazon Alexa tablet lineup launch
Overview
Amazon has announced a major strategic shift in its hardware lineup, retiring the long-standing Fire tablet brand in favor of the new Alexa Tablet series. Moving away from its proprietary Fire OS, the new devices will run on Android, providing native access to the Google Play Store for applications such as YouTube, Gmail, and Netflix.
The lineup consists of three models: the flagship Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, the Alexa Tablet 11, and the Alexa Tablet 8. The 12 Pro features a 12-inch 3:2 aspect ratio display with a 120Hz refresh rate and an optional Nanomatte display developed with Corning to reduce reflections. It is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8400 chipset and supports up to 16GB of RAM. The 12 Pro includes an aluminum unibody and is supported by productivity accessories like the Pro Pen and Pro Keyboard.
A central feature across the range is Alexa+, an integrated AI assistant capable of ‘On-Screen Intelligence,’ which allows the assistant to analyze on-screen content to provide contextual help. The tablets also include a specialized Kindle reading mode that reduces blue light and silences notifications. Additionally, Amazon has introduced a dedicated Kids Tablet line featuring protective cases and AI-powered creative tools such as ‘Storybuilder.’
The new series marks a move toward higher-end, more expensive hardware compared to the budget-focused Fire tablets. The 12 Pro is positioned to compete with premium tablets from Apple and Samsung. Pricing for the new series starts at $229.99 for the Alexa Tablet 8 and $499.99 for the 12 Pro. Pre-orders have begun, with shipping scheduled to start October 14 in the US, Canada, and Mexico, followed by a European rollout on October 19.
