Amazon removes squishy toys from catalog due to safety concerns
Amazon has begun removing certain sensory and squishy toys from its catalog due to significant safety concerns. This action follows warnings from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding counterfeit and non-compliant products.
The CPSC identified that many of these viral toys do not meet federal safety standards. Specifically, counterfeit versions may contain hazardous materials such as water beads, gels, powders, sand, lead, or phthalates. If the outer casing of these toys tears or bursts, children could face risks including intestinal blockages, choking, aspiration, or chemical exposure. Additionally, some toys may pose burn risks if they reach high temperatures when exposed to heat.
In coordination with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, regulators have worked to prevent hundreds of thousands of non-compliant units from entering the country. While Amazon has proactively removed some listings, the company has not specified which exact products were taken down or if previous purchasers will be notified.
