Global squishy toy safety crisis expands

Overview

The global safety crisis regarding gel-filled squishy toys has intensified with expanded recalls and new chemical hazard reports. In the United States, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has ordered recalls for over 37,000 units of Squishy Dumpling (model 3655) and Crazy Squib Ball (model 3984) distributed by ABC Trading Inc., as well as 480 Mochi Malrang Mystery Dumpling units. These products contain water beads that can expand if swallowed, posing a “risk of death” through intestinal obstruction or choking.

New physical hazards have emerged in the United Kingdom, where authorities are investigating toy sets that include syringes and needles intended for “pimple popping” simulations after a child was hospitalized. In response, Amazon has removed several controversial items from its platform.

Chemical hazards remain a primary concern. Paraguay’s Sedeco has banned “Squeezy Dumplings” following UK findings of high benzene concentrations. In Argentina, the government banned “Pinch Family” squishy toys after testing revealed phthalate levels exceeding double the legal limit. While the Danish Environmental Protection Agency recently concluded there is no direct human health risk from “squishy dumplings” despite strong chemical odors, the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) noted that toys in airtight packaging contained ten times more volatile substances than those in non-airtight packaging.

Social media trends, such as the “Squishy Microwave Challenge,” continue to drive risks. Authorities in Germany (BfR), Brazil, and Australia have warned that microwaving, cutting, or puncturing toys can cause burns or release hazardous materials.
