International children's toy safety crisis
Entities: Samsons Cash and Carry Ltd · Squeezy Dumpling · benzene · Buenos Aires Province Government · Office of Product Safety and Standards (UK)
Overview
Since late June 2026, gel‑filled squishy toys have triggered a multinational safety crisis. Reports of burns and chemical exposure from heating, microwaving or leaving the toys in hot cars have emerged in Australia, the United Kingdom, the United States and elsewhere, prompting recalls, seizures and public warnings about benzene, phthalates and other hazardous substances. UK Trading Standards recalled “Squishy Dumplings” after benzene was found at 20 mg/kg; European regulators seized thousands of units in Belgium, the Netherlands, Romania and the UK, while alerts were issued in Canada, China, Bosnia‑Herzegovina, the Isle of Man and Mauritius. The U.S. CPSC warned of counterfeit squishies circulating in Louisiana’s Acadiana region, highlighting risks from water beads, lead, weak materials and a viral microwave‑heating trend.
In early August, a 12‑year‑old in Liverpool suffered full‑dermal burns after a NeeDoh squishy exploded on a hot windowsill, and an 8‑year‑old in France near Saint‑Omer incurred second‑degree facial and torso burns. On 24 July, eight‑year‑old Melvyn Lorio was severely burned when a gel‑filled squishy exploded in his face and chest in Saint‑Omer. He was treated at Lille’s burns centre and scheduled for a scalp‑tissue skin graft. His mother filed a criminal complaint on 1 August, warned other parents on social media, and highlighted the toy’s CE mark without clear safety instructions. France’s DGCCRF opened an investigation into the product’s mechanical, chemical and flammability compliance, saying any non‑conformity could trigger a recall.
The crisis spread to South America when Buenos Aires Province ordered the recall of the imported “Squeezy Dumpling” toy after testing revealed high benzene levels. Provincial officials criticised national import controls and announced inspections and fines to enforce the recall.
