Amazon to Return Portion of $600M Tariff Refunds to Customers

Amazon.com disclosed that it received roughly $600 million in tariff refunds after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled many Trump‑era tariffs illegal. CFO Brian Olsavsky announced the figure on the company's July 30 earnings call, noting that the refunds stem from claims processed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The retailer said it will automatically reimburse shoppers when it can trace a specific import charge to an individual purchase; in other cases the money will be retained to help keep prices low. Because Amazon is not the importer of record for most items—third‑party sellers file the majority of claims—the refund amount is smaller than the company’s total sales volume. This makes Amazon the first major U.S. retailer to publicly commit to passing tariff refunds directly to consumers.
