Amazonas faces emergency as forest fires surge

The state of Amazonas is facing a severe environmental crisis as forest fires have surged, leading to a state of emergency in 36 municipalities. In a 48-hour period, the region recorded 540 new fire outbreaks, a significant increase compared to previous months. Authorities, including Environment Minister João Paulo Capobianco, have indicated that the fires are likely the result of intentional human action aimed at land degradation and preparation for future deforestation.

The intense smoke has severely compromised air quality, particularly in Manaus, where PM 2.5 levels have exceeded WHO guidelines. In response, the Manaus city government suspended all outdoor activities and gatherings from October 14 to October 18. Health researchers from Fiocruz have warned that the pollution poses significant risks to the general population and indigenous communities, who face additional challenges in accessing healthcare.

To combat the blazes, a joint task force involving municipal, state, and federal governments has been deployed. Ibama has mobilized 290 firefighters and six aircraft, including Air Tractor planes for water dropping, to assist in the containment efforts. The crisis is being exacerbated by seasonal droughts and the El Niño phenomenon, which has contributed to extreme heat and irregular rainfall across the region.
