Vegetation and forest fires in Brazil

Overview

Vegetation and forest fires continue to impact multiple Brazilian regions. In Amazonas, a state of emergency has been declared for 36 municipalities following a surge in outbreaks. Data from Inpe indicates 540 new fire outbreaks were recorded in a 48-hour period, representing more than half of the total detected in October. In the first ten days of the month, the state saw 1,380 outbreaks, a 271% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Between January and October 12, 2026, Amazonas recorded 7,815 outbreaks, a 116% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

Recent analysis from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) reveals that in October, eight out of ten fire spots in Amazonas were located within private rural properties registered in the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR). Furthermore, 52.8% of these fires affected areas deforested within the last three years, while only 15.9% reached native vegetation. This pattern, alongside a state government decree prohibiting fire use since September 9, suggests fires are largely driven by human activity. Climatic conditions, including the El Niño phenomenon, have intensified regional drought.

To address the growing health crisis, the SUS National Force (FN-SUS) has established a regional base in Manaus. This follows reports that the public health network recorded 541 medical assistance cases related to smoke exposure between early October and October 14. Rodrigo Stabeli, director of the SUS National Force, stated the base monitors medical supply availability to ensure support reaches pressured areas. Using an interactive dashboard updated by 43 municipalities, teams aim to deploy personnel via aircraft and boats within a 72-hour window. Plans are also underway to install a unit in Porto Velho. Additionally, a federal task force has performed approximately 370 water drops to combat the fires.
