Amazonas forest fires surge amid investigation into organized arson

The state of Amazonas is facing a severe environmental crisis characterized by a surge in forest fires and intense smoke pollution. Data from INPE indicates that Amazonas recorded 7,815 fire outbreaks between January 1 and October 12, 2026, representing a 116% increase compared to the same period in 2025. While the number of active fires has recently shown signs of reduction following a peak of 494 outbreaks on October 10, the situation remains critical due to the ongoing drought and the effects of El Niño.

Minister of Environment João Paulo Capobianco has stated that the fires have a human origin and has raised suspicions of organized criminal activity. A federal task force, including Ibama, ICMBio, and various police forces (Federal, Civil, and Highway Police), is investigating these potential coordinated actions with support from the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin). So far, 120 investigative procedures have been opened to identify those responsible. Authorities have also reported threats against firefighters and brigadiers, with reports of individuals using fuel to reignite fires after crews depart.

The environmental crisis has significant social and health impacts. Dense smoke has compromised air quality in Manaus and neighboring regions, leading to the suspension of in-person classes in several municipal and state educational institutions. The drought has also affected water access and transportation for riverine communities. In response, the government has mobilized 11 aircraft, 330 brigadiers, and various ground and water vehicles to combat the flames. Those found responsible for the fires face administrative fines ranging from R$ 5,000 to R$ 10,000 per hectare, along with potential criminal prosecution.
