Amazonas humanitarian campaign targets drought relief for riverine communities

The ‘Amazônia Solidária 2026’ humanitarian campaign has launched a mobilization to collect non-perishable food and potable water for riverine communities in the Amazonas state metropolitan region. Organized by the collaborative network Converge Amazônia, the initiative aims to collect 23.4 tons of food by October 31.

The donations are intended for families in the Puraquequara and Tarumã-Açu basins, as well as Jatuarana, Paraná da Eva, Paraná do Terra Nova, and Janauari, including Vila Nova and Nova Vila. The severe drought, linked to Super El Niño conditions and below-average rainfall, led the Amazonas government to declare a state of emergency in all 62 municipalities on September 21.

Matheus Amazônia, general coordinator of Converge Amazônia, stated that the goal is to provide organized relief to families facing restricted access to water, food, and essential items. The collected goods will be converted into approximately 23.4 kg food baskets to supplement nutrition while fishing and river transport are disrupted by the dry season. Distribution is scheduled to take place between November 8 and November 22.
