Amazonas drought and food security response
Overview
Following a state of emergency declared in all 62 municipalities of Amazonas on September 21 due to severe drought linked to Super El Niño conditions, humanitarian and governmental efforts have mobilized to address food insecurity.
The ‘Amazônia Solidária 2026’ campaign, organized by the Converge Amazônia network, launched a mobilization to collect 23.4 tons of non-perishable food and potable water. This initiative specifically targets riverine communities in the Puraquequara and Tarumã-Açu basins, as well as several other local areas, to mitigate the impact of disrupted fishing and river transport.
Concurrently, state agencies have implemented regional trade and food security programs. The Amazonas State Sustainable Development Agency (ADS) introduced regional product fairs in Manaus to support rural producers. Additionally, through the Food Acquisition Program (PAA), the state government delivered approximately three tons of food to roughly 200 indigenous families in Eirunepé. In 2026, the PAA has invested over R$ 3.7 million to facilitate the acquisition of more than 581 tons of food from family farmers across 36 municipalities to support areas affected by the drought.
