Amazonas initiatives train family farmers and strengthen Brazil nut and pirarucu value chains

The Instituto de Desenvolvimento Agropecuário e Florestal Sustentável (Idam), in partnership with the municipality of São Sebastião do Uatumã, delivered a three‑day "Boas Práticas na Avicultura" course to 36 family poultry farmers. The program combined theoretical classes at the town hall with practical training on a local farm, covering poultry facility care, productive and sanitary management, and access to public policies. According to Idam local manager Kerolly Lopes, "O curso foi realizado ao longo de três dias, com os primeiros dias consistindo em aulas teóricas e um terceiro dia de aulas práticas na Fazenda Sonho Meu." The veterinary instructor was David Lago dos Santos.

Separately, Sebrae Amazonas and the Instituto Brasileiro de Desenvolvimento e Sustentabilidade (IABS) signed a technical cooperation agreement to boost the Brazil‑nut (castanha‑do‑Brasil) and pirarucu fisheries supply chains across the state. The plan outlines ten strategic actions, including drone‑operator training for about 80 fishers, regularisation drives for roughly 200 family farmers and artisanal fishers, and efforts to register a geographic indication for the Tefé Brazil‑nut. Community entrepreneurs will receive capacity‑building workshops and market‑promotion support. As José Antônio Cardoso Fonseca explained, "As cadeias da castanha‑do‑Brasil e do pirarucu manejado demonstram que é possível gerar renda e desenvolvimento a partir da floresta em pé." Both initiatives aim to increase rural incomes, foster sustainable forest‑based economies, and preserve the Amazon rainforest.
