Brazil environmental and water management
Overview
By late August 2026, Brazil’s water management continued to address infrastructure vulnerabilities and seasonal demands. In Manaus, Águas de Manaus completed a maintenance program at the Ponta do Ismael complex on May 5, involving over 30 preventive interventions to prepare for the Amazonian summer peak. Following this, a scheduled shutdown of the Ponta das Lajes Water Treatment Station was set for August 18 to prepare for the dry season. This maintenance, which included installing new intake pumps and cleaning the station, was expected to interrupt supplies in the city’s East and North zones, with full service recovery potentially taking up to 48 hours.
In São Paulo, Sabesp managed localized disruptions caused by aging infrastructure. On August 22, a major leak on Rua Érico Veríssimo in the Butantã district caused significant water spraying and shortages. Sabesp confirmed the leak was contained and repairs completed, noting that some pipes have operated for over 80 years. To combat such issues and reduce losses, Sabesp is accelerating network modernization, investing approximately R$ 1 billion annually since 2024, with a planned total investment of R$ 9.7 billion through 2029.
These developments follow earlier reports of the Cantareira reservoir system remaining in an alert range and a surge in water-meter thefts in the Baixada Santista region, which exceeded 77% of the previous year’s total in the first half of 2026.
