Amazonas Public Defender investigates electricity bill increases
The Amazonas State Public Defender's Office (DPE-AM) has established a dedicated email channel to collect reports from consumers regarding significant increases in electricity bills. The initiative aims to identify patterns of potential irregularities or undue charges issued by the utility provider Âmbar Energia.
Consumers are requested to submit copies of their energy bills from June to August for both 2025 and 2026. The collection period will remain open until the first week of September. Public defender Carlos Almeida Filho stated that the gathered data will be used to evaluate whether the price hikes are unjustified and to determine necessary administrative or judicial actions.
In response to inquiries from the DPE-AM, Âmbar Energia stated it has not identified any technical or regulatory factors that would justify unexpected or widespread increases for the same level of consumption. The company attributed the variations to increased energy use due to high temperatures in the North region, seasonal climate factors, and tariff adjustments authorized by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
