Amazonas consumer rights investigation
Overview
The Amazonas State Public Defender's Office (DPE-AM) has launched an investigation into significant increases in electricity bills reported by consumers. The office established a dedicated email channel to collect billing data from June to August for both 2025 and 2026 to identify potential irregularities or undue charges by the utility provider Âmbar Energia.
Public defender Carlos Almeida Filho indicated that the collected data will be used to determine if price hikes are unjustified and to decide on subsequent administrative or judicial actions. In response to the inquiry, Âmbar Energia stated it has not identified technical or regulatory factors justifying widespread increases, instead attributing variations to seasonal climate factors, high temperatures in the North region, and tariff adjustments authorized by the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel).
