Amazonas State Reports Highest Number of Indigenous Lands Under Deforestation Pressure
A new Imazon report titled “Ameaça e Pressão de Desmatamento em Áreas Protegidas” shows that the Brazilian state of Amazonas holds the largest number of indigenous territories facing strong deforestation pressure. Four territories from Amazonas rank among the ten most threatened between April and June 2026, with the Yanomami territory – spanning Amazonas and Roraima – placed first. Other Amazonian lands listed include TI Pirahã (6th), TI Rio Biá (7th) and TI Coatá‑Laranjal (9th). The study also highlights that the state appears five times in the list of most pressured indigenous areas, underscoring risks to traditional livelihoods, food security, cultural practices and biodiversity.
In addition to indigenous lands, the report identifies the Triunfo do Xingu Environmental Protection Area in Pará as the most pressured APA for the fifth consecutive year, while Pará overall records the highest number of protected areas under threat. Researchers call for intensified monitoring, stricter enforcement and accountability to curb the ongoing forest loss.
