Amboura Reserve hosts diverse wildlife in Senegal's Podor

The Amboura Reserve, located in the Podor department near Thillé Boubacar in northern Senegal, serves as a 1,050-hectare sanctuary for diverse wildlife. Established in 2016 within a classified forest, the reserve emphasizes natural living; animals such as giraffes, zebras, and oryx live freely without human feeding or artificial intervention.

Conservation efforts at the site have yielded significant results, including the population of scimitar-horned oryx and cervicapres, which has grown from five to 122 individuals. The reserve also hosts various local and introduced species, including wildebeests, ostriches, and endangered birds like the great bustard.

Management aims to transform the reserve into a major tourist destination by 2027, provided access is opened within three kilometers of the national road. The site's ecosystem is characterized by seasonal shifts between lush vegetation during the rainy season and more arid Sahelian landscapes during the dry season.
