Amboura Wildlife Reserve conservation in Senegal

Overview

The Amboura Wildlife Reserve in Senegal’s Podor department is working to restore the Sahelian savanna through natural regeneration. Established in 2016 across 1,050 hectares, the project avoids artificial food or concrete infrastructure to allow for natural ecosystem development.

Conservation efforts have led to significant wildlife populations. The reserve hosts giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and various bird species. Notably, the population of scimitar-horned oryx has grown from five to 122 individuals, and the site supports over 80 oryx gazelles.

Management intends to develop the reserve into a major tourist destination by 2027. This goal depends on improving accessibility, specifically by opening access within three kilometers of the national road.
