Amboura Wildlife Reserve restores Sahelian savanna in Senegal
The Amboura Wildlife Reserve in the Podor department of Senegal is successfully restoring the Sahelian savanna through a natural regeneration approach. Established in 2016 across 1,050 hectares, the project was founded by the late Aliou Ardo Sow and is currently being developed by his son, Oumar Sow.
The reserve focuses on ecosystem restoration without the use of artificial food or concrete infrastructure. It currently provides a habitat for various species, including over 80 oryx gazelles—once a threatened species in Senegal—122 scimitar-horned oryx, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and cobas.
Located in the Ndiayène Pendao commune within the Thillé Boubacar arrondissement, the reserve aims to become a major tourist destination. Plans are underway to improve accessibility to the area by 2027 to facilitate its development as a wildlife destination for Senegal.
