AmCham México anticipates reduction in U.S. steel and aluminum tariffs

AmCham México anticipates a potential reduction in U.S. tariffs on Mexican steel and aluminum imports. Pedro Casas Alatriste, the organization's director general, suggests that while a total elimination of these tariffs is unlikely, a reduction is a probable outcome during upcoming negotiations between September and November.

Currently, the United States maintains a 50% tariff on these imports under Section 232, despite the T-MEC agreement providing preferential access for goods meeting specific rules of origin. Casas identified three possible scenarios: total elimination, a reduction of current rates, or a partial elimination that maintains levies on certain imports while exempting regional manufactured goods.

AmCham México represents approximately 1,500 companies that collectively account for 21% of Mexico's GDP and 20% of private investment.
