Brazil evaluates economic reciprocity following US tariff increases
The Brazilian government has formally initiated a process under the Economic Reciprocity Law to evaluate potential responses to new tariffs imposed by the United States. These US measures include a 25% tariff on various Brazilian products and an additional 12.5% surcharge linked to allegations regarding labor practices. This escalation has increased the tariff disadvantage for Brazilian exports to the US from 0.8 to 7.5 percentage points.
Finance Minister Dario Durigan stated that the government will proceed with caution, intending to consult with both Brazilian and foreign entrepreneurs to assess the economic impacts before any countermeasures are implemented. The current phase focuses on diplomatic consultations to seek a negotiated solution rather than immediate retaliation.
The business community, represented by Amcham Brasil, has expressed concern regarding potential retaliation. A survey by the organization indicates that 90.5% of companies favor diplomatic and commercial dialogue with the US, while only 3.2% support the adoption of reciprocity measures. Amcham warns that retaliatory tariffs could increase costs for domestic companies and consumers, disrupt supply chains, and hinder investment.
