AMD develops Neural Lighting to rival NVIDIA DLSS 5
AMD is reportedly developing a neural rendering technology, internally referred to as ‘Neural Lighting’, to compete with NVIDIA’s DLSS 5. According to industry leaker Kepler_L2, this technology aims to use artificial intelligence to replace or enhance traditional shaders, specifically focusing on improving lighting and shadow quality.
Unlike NVIDIA’s approach, which primarily operates on rendered screen space, AMD’s rumored method may involve more direct integration with game engine data, such as geometry and depth buffers. This could allow for more detailed scene reconstruction, including information from areas outside the camera's field of view.
Due to the high computational demands of neural rendering, the technology is expected to be exclusive to AMD’s upcoming RDNA 5 architecture. This hardware is anticipated to power next-generation consoles, such as the PlayStation 6 and Xbox Project Helix. While official confirmation from AMD is pending, industry estimates suggest the RDNA 5 architecture and its accompanying features may not arrive until mid-2027 or early 2028.
