NBA 2K27 release and DLSS 5 technology developments
Overview
Visual Concepts has released NBA 2K27, marking a significant evolution in the basketball simulation franchise. The title introduces substantial improvements to player movement, defensive intelligence, and possession control, with some analyses suggesting it surpasses the depth and refinement of NBA 2K11. A key technical advancement is the expanded use of ‘ProPlay’ technology, which includes over 7,000 new animations designed to make movements, such as direction changes and finishes at the rim, feel more natural and responsive. NVIDIA has officially announced DLSS 5, which introduces ‘3D-Guided Neural Rendering’ to bridge the gap between real-time graphics and cinematic photorealism. This technology provides detailed control over elements such as contact shadows, ambient occlusion, and skin response. NBA 2K27 serves as the debut title for this feature. While currently exclusive to the GeForce RTX 50 series, NVIDIA indicated that support for the RTX 40 series may follow once tuning is complete. GeForce NOW Ultimate subscribers can currently access the technology via cloud servers powered by RTX 5080 GPUs. Due to the high resource demands of neural rendering, NVIDIA has integrated ‘6x Multi Frame Generation’ as a necessary complement to maintain performance. Early benchmarks on an RTX 5080 running NBA 2K27 showed frame rate drops of approximately 60% at 1440p and up to 73% at 4K, making the technology heavily reliant on these complementary AI tools. While the technology enhances realism, it has faced criticism for creating an ‘uncanny valley’ effect and altering intended artistic styles. Hardware concerns have also surfaced, with unverified reports of a power connector melting on an RTX 5090 during testing. To address performance hurdles, modders are expanding the accessibility of DLSS 5. The ReShade add-on ‘MGPU Bridge’ allows users to offload the intensive neural rendering process to a second GPU.
