AMD prepares Zen 6 support and security features for Linux

AMD is preparing for the launch of its next-generation Zen 6 processors through significant updates to the Linux kernel. These developments focus on both hardware security and performance optimization.

Engineers have introduced a feature called Enhanced SMT Protection (ESMTP) via Linux patches. This technology strengthens isolation between hardware threads when a virtual machine protected by SEV-SNP is running. By enforcing stricter rules on how simultaneous threads share a physical core, ESMTP aims to prevent side-channel attacks. However, this hardware-level verification may result in performance costs in highly virtualized environments, meaning it will likely remain disabled by default.

Additionally, the upcoming Linux 7.4 kernel will include optimizations for the AMD P-State driver specifically tailored for the Zen 6 architecture. This driver manages frequency and power consumption, and these updates are designed to ensure efficient energy usage and performance as soon as the new chips reach the market.
