AMD Ryzen Zen 6 preparation begins with Linux kernel 7.4 updates

AMD is preparing the Linux kernel 7.4 to support the upcoming Ryzen Zen 6 processor architecture. The updates focus on the amd-pstate driver, which manages CPU frequencies and power policies through Collaborative Processor Performance Control (CPPC).

Unlike previous generations, Zen 6 will utilize a more complex core structure. The kernel updates aim to allow the system to distinguish between four distinct core categories: performance, dense, efficiency, and a new low-power type. This differentiation allows the operating system to assign specific energy parameters and power profiles to different cores based on the workload.

By refining the Energy Performance Preference (EPP) parameter, the Linux kernel will be able to better communicate whether a task requires maximum performance or optimized energy efficiency. This early integration ensures that Zen 6 hardware can achieve optimal power management and responsiveness immediately upon release.
