AMD unveils Zen 6 LP low‑power core mixing elements from Zen generations

AMD announced that its upcoming Zen 6 CPU family will include three distinct core types: the standard high‑performance Zen 6, the density‑focused Zen 6c, and a new low‑power Zen 6 LP core. The Zen 6 LP core is designed to minimise energy consumption during background workloads and idle periods, targeting battery‑powered devices such as the rumored PS6 Portable and future APU Medusa processors.

According to leaked specifications, Zen 6 LP retains the Zen 6 ISA but combines microarchitectural features from earlier generations: core logic similar to Zen 5, a 256‑bit floating‑point unit derived from Zen 4, a 512 KB L2 cache per core taken from Zen 3, and a 1 MB L3 cache per core recalling Zen 2. Linux kernel patches already expose the new topology and manage frequency scaling for these cores. Early reports suggest Zen 6 LP could match or even exceed the performance of current Zen 5 and Zen 5c cores while delivering superior performance‑per‑watt.
