Amendolara, Italy: Four migrant farmworkers killed in van fire

On 4 June 2026 a minivan parked at the SS 106 service area near Amendolara, Calabria, was set ablaze, killing four Afghan migrant farmworkers. One 35‑year‑old survivor, Mohammad Taj Alamyar, escaped with severe burns and a broken arm.

Police quickly secured surveillance footage that showed two Pakistani men, Ahmed Safeer and Ali Raza, aged 31, igniting the vehicle. Both have been detained in Castrovillari prison and face charges of multiple aggravated homicide. Investigators are also probing a possible third accomplice mentioned by the survivor.

A witness told investigators the violence erupted after the victims complained about being forced to live ten people in one room. The exact motive is still under investigation, but authorities stress the case highlights the vulnerability of migrant workers in Italy.
