Amendolara murders ignite nationwide caporalato crackdown
Overview
The arson attack on a minivan near Amendolara on 1 June 2026 that killed four migrant farm workers reignited Italy’s anti‑caporalato drive. Two Pakistani suspects were arrested after CCTV footage showed them blocking the doors and pouring gasoline into the vehicle. The murders prompted immediate condemnation from the prime minister, regional presidents and the bishops of Calabria, and sparked mass protests in Amendolara, Florence and across the south, led by CGIL, FLAI and political figures such as Elly Schlein and Maurizio Landini.
In response, Labour Minister Marina Calderone convened a caporalato summit in Reggio Calabria, announced a summer‑long inspection campaign involving the Labour Inspectorate, Carabinieri and INPS, and rolled out Article 18‑ter of decree‑law 145/2024 to protect whistle‑blowers. Regional councils in Calabria and Basilicata adopted measures to create a register of compliant farms, grant tender advantages to “virtuous” operators and fund free health surveillance for vulnerable communities.
The crackdown expanded beyond agriculture. Carabinieri raids in Sicily, Umbria and Romagna targeted illegal farms and labour brokers, resulting in dozens of charges and fines. Parallel investigations into the luxury fashion supply chain led to coordinated raids on high‑end brands in Milan and the seizure of Chinese‑run farms in Prato for employing undocumented workers under unsafe conditions. The combined actions underscore a unified national effort to dismantle caporalato networks, improve worker safety and enforce labour standards across Italy’s agricultural and fashion sectors.
