Amendolara worker deaths spur Italian regional push against caporalato

A deadly incident in the Calabrian town of Amendolara, where migrant workers identified as Waseem, Amin, Safi and Ullah were murdered, has highlighted the problem of illegal labour recruitment (caporalato) in Italy. Regional councilor Ernesto Alecci (PD) called the images “dramatic and devastating”, urging the regional council on 8 June to adopt clear, verifiable actions to fully implement the 2016 anti‑caporalato law and the 2018 regional law, strengthen the anti‑caporalato working group, and improve safe transport, decent housing and local services for agricultural workers.

Union leader Antonio Castellucci of the FAI‑CISL echoed the call, demanding a common front for legality and dignified work. He stressed the need for more inspections, stricter enforcement of existing legislation, better migrant entry mechanisms and investments in professional training, arguing that the tragedy shows the limits of current policies and the urgency of concrete measures to protect workers and legitimate businesses.
