American Airlines flies first U.S. passenger jet on synthetic eSAF fuel

American Airlines operated a scheduled flight from Corpus Christi International Airport to Dallas Fort Worth International Airport using electro‑sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) produced by Infinium at its Pathfinder power‑to‑liquids plant in Corpus Christi. The fuel, made from captured carbon dioxide and renewable electricity, was blended with conventional Jet A, met ASTM International specifications, and was delivered through the airport’s existing fuel storage and distribution system without any modifications to aircraft or infrastructure. The flight marks the first U.S. commercial passenger flight to use synthetic jet fuel that does not rely on biobased feedstocks and is the first delivery of such fuel to a commercial airport in the United States. Infinium says the eSAF can cut lifecycle greenhouse‑gas emissions by more than 90% compared with conventional petroleum‑based jet fuel. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom called the event a significant moment for aviation, while Infinium CEO Robert Schuetzle said it demonstrates a step toward wider commercial adoption of low‑carbon fuels. American Airlines has signed an off‑take agreement for larger volumes of eSAF from Infinium’s upcoming Project Roadrunner plant, slated to begin production in 2027 and expected to produce over five million gallons annually.
