American bolete expansion noted in Polish forests

The American bolete, also known as the slender king bolete, is increasingly appearing in Polish forests. Originally from North America, the species arrived in Europe in the late 1980s and is rapidly expanding its range. While initially confined to the Podlaskie and Suwałki regions, it is now being reported in Mazovia, Silesia, and the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.

Although the mushroom is edible, naturalists are concerned about its potential to displace native species. Experts are urging foragers to document and report sightings to help track the expansion. The mushroom is characterized by a large light-brown cap and a tall, white stem with distinct vertical grooves.

In addition to monitoring invasive species, health authorities advise caution during mushroom foraging. Experts recommend avoiding old, soft, or insect-infested specimens and warn against collecting mushrooms near busy roads, industrial plants, or landfills due to the risk of heavy metal absorption from the soil.
