American College of Cardiology emphasizes dietary patterns for heart health
A new scientific statement from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) emphasizes that heart health depends on overall dietary quality and patterns rather than the restriction of a single nutrient. Experts recommend diets rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, nuts, seeds, legumes, fish, and unsaturated fats. Conversely, they advise limiting saturated fats, added sugars, sodium, and refined carbohydrates.
Dietary patterns such as the Mediterranean and DASH diets have strong evidence for cardiovascular benefits. While highly processed foods are often a concern due to high levels of sugar and sodium, experts note that not all processed foods are inherently unhealthy; the primary issue lies with those lacking nutritional value.
Specific foods like edamame can support heart health. As a source of plant-based protein and fiber, edamame may help lower LDL cholesterol. Consuming approximately 25 grams of soy protein daily has been linked to reductions in total and LDL cholesterol. However, experts stress that no single food can lower cholesterol on its own; it must be part of a balanced dietary regimen.
