American Electric Power to invest $4 billion in Wyoming fuel cell project for Google

American Electric Power (AEP) has announced plans to invest approximately $4 billion in a 702-megawatt fuel cell generation project near Cheyenne, Wyoming. The project is being developed under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google to meet the company's growing energy demands.

The facility, Cheyenne Fuel Cell, LLC, is approximately 92% owned and controlled by AEP, with the remaining stake held by funds advised by Basalt Infrastructure Partners. The project will utilize advanced solid-oxide fuel cell technology from Bloom Energy, which generates electricity without natural gas combustion. Plans also include the integration of carbon capture technology to provide near-zero-emissions power.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the facility expected to be fully operational by the end of 2028.
