Google clean energy procurement initiatives

Overview

Google has entered into significant long-term energy agreements to support the electricity demands of its data centers and artificial intelligence operations.

In early October 2026, Google signed a $4.3 billion deal with Constellation Energy to add 890 MW of nuclear capacity to the PJM Interconnection grid. This 20-year agreement involves modernizing 11 existing nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, with full capacity expected by 2032. The partnership also includes a 15-year agreement for 2,700 MW from Constellation’s existing fleet and a technology collaboration to use AI for grid optimization.

Shortly after, American Electric Power (AEP) announced a $4 billion investment in a 702-megawatt fuel cell project near Cheyenne, Wyoming. This project, developed under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google, will utilize solid-oxide fuel cell technology and potential carbon capture to provide near-zero-emissions power. Construction is slated to begin in 2026, with operations expected by the end of 2028.
