American Heart Association defines safe daily caffeine limits
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), a daily intake of up to 400 mg of caffeine is considered safe for most adults. This amount is approximately equivalent to three to five cups of filtered coffee, with each cup measuring about 230 to 240 ml.
Research published in the journal Circulation suggests that moderate coffee consumption, specifically between two and four cups daily, is associated with a lower risk of coronary disease, heart failure, and stroke. However, health benefits are linked to moderate amounts rather than excessive consumption.
Experts note that caffeine levels vary significantly based on the type of coffee—such as espresso, instant, or French press—and the preparation method. Because caffeine content depends on concentration and cup size rather than just the number of servings, individuals should be mindful of the specific milligrams consumed rather than just the number of cups.
