Amethi factory produces first indigenous AK-203 ‘Sher’ rifle

India has successfully tested the first 100% indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, named ‘Sher’, at the Korwa factory in Amethi. Produced by the Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) joint venture, the rifle is claimed to be made entirely from Indian-sourced materials and components rather than just being assembled locally.

The AK-203 is a 7.62x39mm gas-operated rifle based on the Kalashnikov platform, featuring modern ergonomic designs and modular accessory rails. It has a firing rate of approximately 700 rounds per minute and an effective range of about 800 meters. The rifle is intended to replace the INSAS rifles currently used by the Indian Army.

Trials by the Indian Army are expected to begin in September 2026. The production goal is to manufacture over 600,000 units. IRRPL aims to scale production capacity to manufacture one rifle every 100 seconds at the Amethi facility to meet delivery timelines.
