The Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) joint venture in Amethi has reached key milestones in the production of the indigenous AK-203 assault rifle, designated ‘Sher’. Initially, the Korwa factory produced the first 100% indigenous version of the rifle, intended to replace the Indian Army’s aging INSAS rifles. This ‘Sher’ model is reportedly made entirely from Indian-sourced materials and components and has successfully completed firing trials at the IRRPL facility.

This achievement marks a transition from phased localization to end-to-end domestic manufacturing. The AK-203, a Russian-designed Kalashnikov pattern weapon, is expected to address reliability issues associated with the INSAS rifles in high-altitude conditions. To support the programme, Adani Defence & Aerospace has signed a five-year agreement with IRRPL to supply indigenous 7.62x39 mm small-calibre ammunition, creating an integrated domestic supply chain.

The AK-203 is a central component of a broader Indian Army modernization strategy to enhance infantry capabilities and reduce import dependency. This strategy involves a dual-rifle approach, utilizing both the AK-203 and the American SIG-716i battle rifle. The total order for the AK-203 stands at 601,427 units.

Complementing these small-arms upgrades, the Army is also replacing aging 9 mm sub-machine guns with 425,000 Close Quarter Battle (CQB) carbines via contracts with Bharat Forge and PLR Systems. Army Chief General Dhiraj Seth has emphasized that these hardware upgrades must be paired with broader defence self-reliance and the development of scalable, low-cost technologies to suit India’s diverse geographic and climatic conditions.
