AMETRAMO raises concerns over misuse of traditional medicine in Mozambique

The Association of Traditional Doctors of Mozambique (AMETRAMO) has raised concerns regarding the integrity of traditional medicine in the provinces of Manica and Gaza.

In Manica, AMETRAMO officials accused certain religious leaders of publicly criticizing traditional medicine while secretly consulting healers to perform alleged miracles and attract more followers and tithes. Association advisor Emília Olavo described this behavior as contradictory. In response, Manica's chief medical officer, Flávio Roque, urged traditional practitioners to respect their professional limits and refer patients to sanitary units when clinical needs exceed their capabilities.

In Gaza, AMETRAMO expressed concern over individuals using traditional medicine to make false promises of easy wealth through social media and television. Member Fulgêncio Nhabanga stated that these practices exploit vulnerable people and damage the credibility of legitimate practitioners. Additionally, the association reported acts of vandalism against registered traditional healers in districts including Guijá, Mabalane, Chókwè, and Chigubo.
