Medical regulation and integrity issues in Mozambique

Overview

Mozambique is facing challenges regarding the integrity and regulation of medical practices. Authorities have launched operations to combat the illegal sale and diversion of pharmaceuticals. In Niassa province, a joint task force arrested three individuals, including two health sector employees, for allegedly supplying the parallel market with products diverted from the National Health System. In Nampula province, a health agent was detained for the suspected diversion of antiretroviral drugs, including those supported by UNICEF.

Simultaneously, the Association of Traditional Doctors of Mozambique (AMETRAMO) has raised concerns regarding the misuse of traditional medicine in Manica and Gaza provinces. In Manica, officials accused certain religious leaders of criticizing traditional medicine publicly while secretly consulting healers. In Gaza, the association reported individuals using traditional medicine to make false promises of wealth via social media and television, as well as acts of vandalism against registered traditional healers.
