Amir Shokeen arrested for racial harassment of Tripura youth

Delhi Police have arrested social media influencer Amir Shokeen following the circulation of a viral video showing him making racial slurs and derogatory remarks toward a youth from Tripura. The video, which depicts Shokeen mocking the individual’s appearance and identity by calling him “Chinese,” sparked widespread outrage across Northeast India.

Shokeen was traced to a relative’s house in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area after police used technical surveillance to track his movements. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Authorities noted that Shokeen has a prior criminal record involving charges of public nuisance and criminal intimidation.

In response to the backlash, Shokeen released an apology video claiming the interaction was “scripted” and intended as humor. However, his apology drew further criticism after he referred to the state of Tripura as “Tripuram.”

Political leaders, including Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, have condemned the incident. The Tripura Students Forum Delhi filed a formal complaint, and a specialized team from the Tripura Police is traveling to Delhi to coordinate with local law enforcement.
