Amir Shokeen remanded to five-day police custody
Overview
Delhi Police have arrested social media influencer Amir Shokeen following the circulation of a viral video in which he allegedly subjected a youth from Tripura to racial abuse and public humiliation. The footage reportedly shows Shokeen using slurs such as ‘Chinki’ and ‘Chiness’ while mocking the young man’s appearance.
Shokeen was traced to a relative’s residence in Delhi’s Karol Bagh area through technical surveillance. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Authorities noted that Shokeen has a prior criminal record involving charges of public nuisance and criminal intimidation.
In response to the backlash, Shokeen issued apologies on social media, claiming the interaction was scripted for humor and expressing regret to the people of Tripura. However, his apology drew further criticism after he referred to the state as ‘Tripuram’. The incident prompted formal complaints from the Tripura Students Forum Delhi (TSFD) and various student organizations, alongside condemnation from political leaders and Union Minister Kiren Rijiju.
Following the expiration of an initial one-day judicial custody, the Tis Hazari Court has remanded Shokeen to five days of police custody. The Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit is handling the investigation, which seeks to recover a mobile phone and travel to Ahmedabad to identify and arrest other individuals appearing in the video. While the 19-year-old victim, a housekeeping staff member in Ahmedabad, had previously stated he pardoned Shokeen following an unconditional apology, police are proceeding due to significant public and political pressure.
