Amit Shah reviews Siliguri Corridor security and meets Gorkha leaders

Union Home Minister Amit Shah concluded a three-day visit to North Bengal with high-level meetings focused on border security and regional political stability. A primary objective was reviewing the security of the Siliguri Corridor, a strategic land link known as the ‘Chicken’s Neck’. To reinforce this area, the Centre is establishing a ‘triangular security grid’ featuring new military garrisons in Dhubri (Assam), Kishanganj (Bihar), and Chopra (West Bengal) to enhance coordination between central forces, intelligence agencies, and state police.

During his visit, Shah addressed long-standing regional issues by meeting with Gorkha community leaders and political representatives from the Darjeeling hills. He announced the formation of a committee led by former BSF Director General Pankaj Kumar Singh to draft an agreement and finalize modalities for a ‘permanent political solution’ regarding Gorkha identity and constitutional recognition.

Shah also addressed border management, criticizing the previous Mamata Banerjee-led government for delaying land allotments necessary for border fencing. He credited the current administration under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari for promptly providing 1,129 acres of land to the BSF and SSB to strengthen frontier security.
